6 Months Old Milestones

Lots of changes at six months old! Baby is well on his/her way to being mobile and chatting! It’s a really fun and interactive age. Let’s take a look at what’s expected at six months of age:

  • Looks at self in mirror
  • Is often happy and responds to others emotions
  • Knows familiar faces
  • Likes playing with others
  • Shows emotion, socially smiles and laughs
  • Shows affection to caregivers
  • Makes sounds in response to sounds
  • Responds to name by looking and vocalizing
  • Vocalizes pleasure and displeasure
  • Takes turns vocalizing
  • Varies pitch and loudness
  • Strings consonants and vowels together when babbling
  • Imitates some sounds and movements
  • Brings things to mouth
  • Passes things between hands
  • Intentionally drops objects
  • Reaches for things out of reach
  • Looks around and visually tracks
  • Rolls over in both directions
  • Begins to sit without support
  • May rock back and forth in attempts to move, may crawl backwards
  • Swallows pureed foods

Recommended toys for 6 month olds: Rattles, stuffed animals, board/bath books, textured objects that baby can grasp, stacking toys, musical toys, light-up toys, mouthable toys, colorful play gyms, Jumperoo/Exersaucer, play mat

These milestones are typically acquired within this time frame however all babies develop at their own pace. Talk to your child’s pediatrician if you have questions about their development.
