4 Months Old Milestones

Four months old is a fun age! Babies are just starting to really engage with their environments and hopefully starting to sleep for longer periods of time. Let’s take a look at what is typically expected to happen around four months of age.

  • Babbles using consonant like sounds (p, b, m)
  • May imitate sounds
  • Vocalizes excitement and displeasure
  • Smiles spontaneously
  • Comforted by pleasant voice, responds to affection
  • Begins to play peek-a-boo
  • Laughs out loud
  • Looks when name is called
  • Smiles at or pats own image in mirror
  • Watches faces
  • Recognizes familiar people
  • Shows interest in food, may begin swallowing pureed foods
  • Begins to roll from back to stomach or stomach to back
  • Pushes up to elbows when lying on stomach
  • Reaches for toys
  • Visually tracks a toy/object from side to side
  • Holds and shakes toys
  • Brings hands to mouth
  • Holds head steady
  • Sits up with support

Recommended toys for 4 month olds: Rattles, stuffed animals, board/bath books, textured objects that baby can grasp, musical toys, light-up toys,  colorful play gyms, baby safe mirrors

It’s important to note that babies develop at their own unique rate. Milestones are a general timeline. If you have any questions about your baby’s development, talk with your pediatrician.
