3 Months Old Milestones

I wish I would have written this post when I was living the moment with three months old baby Fisher. But looking back, I was so sleep deprived that I could hardly complete a thought much less write an organized column. During that time period I was a hot, hot mess! Rarely showered, hair in a doodoo ball, never changed out of pajamas, shirt soaked with breast milk and spit up, begging for more than two hours of sleep. So what was going on with baby at three months old? Let’s take a look….

  • Turns head toward voice (localization)
  • Startles to loud noise
  • Coos, makes pleasure sounds
  • Cries when hungry or uncomfortable
  • Makes noises other than crying
  • Differentiated cries for hunger, displeasure, pain, and fatigue
  • Looks at faces in close range
  • Stops crying when comforted
  • Smiles socially
  • Raises head briefly when lying on stomach
  • Begins to sit up with support
  • Tolerates brief time on tummy
  • Reaches for and grasps objects
  • Inspects own hands
  • Visually follows an object when slowly moved through line of sight
  • Aware of strange people and situations
  • Shows excitement

Recommended toys for 3 month olds: Rattles, stuffed animals, board/bath books, textured objects that baby can grasp, links, colorful play gyms, baby safe mirrors

It’s important to note that babies develop at their own unique rate. Babies are not cookie cutters, their development is highly variable. If you have any questions about your baby’s development, talk with your pediatrician.
